Keychron V1 Knob | Review

After using the Keychron V1 Knob for a while, I wanted to share my thoughts on this keyboard.

Introduction

The Keychron V1 Knob Version is a compact, highly customizable mechanical keyboard that has quickly gained popularity among keyboard enthusiasts and productivity-focused users. With its 75% layout, hot-swappable switches, and the addition of a versatile rotary knob, the V1 offers a premium typing experience at an accessible price point.

I primarily use the Colemak-DH layout for typing, but I wanted a keyboard that would also allow me to easily switch to QWERTZ as a fallback — especially for situations like gaming. That’s one of the main reasons I picked up the Keychron V1: it makes switching between layouts and customizing keymaps incredibly easy, so I can comfortably use both Colemak-DH and QWERTZ whenever needed, although now the Colemak-DH-Layout is dedicated to my ZSA Moonlander while the Keychron sticks to QWERTZ - basically one for work / programming and the other for hobbies and gaming.

In this review, I’ll share my impressions after several weeks of daily use, highlighting its design, features, and overall value.

First Impressions

Unboxing the Keychron V1 Knob Version, I was immediately struck by its solid build quality. The keyboard features a sturdy plastic case with a slight weight that keeps it stable on the desk. The rotary knob, located in the top right corner, feels smooth and responsive, adding a touch of sophistication to the overall design. The included keycaps are double-shot PBT, providing a pleasant texture and excellent durability.

Setup was straightforward—simply plug in the detachable USB-C cable, and the keyboard is ready to go. The V1 is compatible with both Windows and macOS, and it comes with extra keycaps for both operating systems.

Typing Experience

The typing feel on the Keychron V1 is excellent. I opted for the version with Keychron Red switches, which are linear and provide a smooth, quiet keystroke—ideal for both typing and gaming. It feels very similar to the Kailh Silver switches, which I use on my ZSA Moonlander. Thanks to the hot-swappable PCB, users can easily swap out switches without soldering, allowing for complete customization. The stock Keychron switches are smooth and consistent, but the real magic comes from experimenting with different switch types to find your perfect match.

The gasket-mounted design and sound-dampening foam layers contribute to a soft, muted typing sound and a comfortable, slightly cushioned keypress. The stabilizers are pre-lubed and perform well, minimizing rattle on larger keys like the spacebar and enter.

The Knob

The standout feature of this version is, of course, the knob (rotary encoder) in the top right corner. This knob is not just a visual highlight, but also a highly practical tool in everyday use. Out of the box, it is typically set to control the system volume—turning it adjusts the volume up or down, and pressing it can mute or unmute the sound (depending on your configuration).

What makes the knob truly special is its full programmability via VIA or QMK. You can easily remap its functions to suit your workflow: for example, use it to scroll through documents, zoom in and out, switch browser tabs, control media playback, or trigger custom macros. The configuration is done intuitively in the VIA software, and advanced users can even write their own QMK firmware code for more complex actions.

In daily use, I found the knob to be incredibly convenient for quick adjustments—whether I’m lowering the music while on a call or switching between apps. Its tactile feedback and smooth rotation make it a joy to use, and once you get used to it, you’ll likely miss it on other keyboards. It just feels very solid and handy.

Customization & Software

Keychron’s support for VIA and QMK firmware means the V1 is highly customizable. Remapping keys, creating macros, and adjusting lighting effects are all possible through an intuitive interface. The keyboard also supports per-key RGB backlighting, which can be customized to match your setup or mood.

Everyday Use

In practice, the Keychron V1 Knob Version has become my go-to keyboard for both work and leisure. The compact layout saves desk space without sacrificing essential keys, and the knob adds a layer of functionality that I didn’t know I needed until I had it. Whether I’m coding, writing, or gaming, the V1 delivers a satisfying and efficient experience.

Downsides

No product is perfect. The plastic case, while sturdy, doesn’t have the premium feel of an aluminum chassis. Some users may also find the keyboard a bit high off the desk, so a wrist rest is recommended for optimal comfort. Additionally, while the RGB lighting is vibrant, it’s not as bright as some higher-end models.

Conclusion

The Keychron V1 Knob Version is an outstanding keyboard for anyone looking to upgrade their typing setup. Its combination of build quality, customization options, and the unique rotary knob make it a standout choice in its price range. Whether you’re a seasoned keyboard enthusiast or just looking for a reliable, feature-rich keyboard for everyday use, the V1 is easy to recommend.

If you value flexibility, comfort, and a touch of innovation, the Keychron V1 Knob Version is well worth considering.
